"Can you lose weight by walking an hour a day?" is one of the most common questions I hear on my email list. People want to know if they can really lose weight by just walking and if it's possible to do that and still have energy to play sports or whatever they want to do.
There are two answers to that question. The first answer is no. The second answer is yes. The second answer isn't what people want to hear. So, let's get real here.
"You can't lose weight by walking an hour a day." First off, let's put the myth out of the window right now. Walking is great for your health, will improve your mood and has other positive benefits. In fact, you can walk your way to losing weight. It's just going to take some dedication and time.
"Is there a way to do it that won't be as hard as walking?" This is another reasonable question. The good news is that there are ways to make exercising fun and keep you motivated. Walking is hard. We all have to do it in order to lose weight. If we can make exercise fun, we're more likely to stick with it long term.
So can you lose weight by doing 10 minutes of pushups? That's correct, but it's not how you lose weight. You can get lean and fit and lose weight. The question is, can you find a routine that works and keeps it fun?
The thing about walking is that it's repetitive. This means that you're burning calories all day and you're building endurance. But you must keep your motivation up or else you'll soon succumb to the fatigue and stop walking.
What about swimming? You can build muscle and tone up and you're breathing harder as you work toward your weight loss goal. The water will help burn calories too!
Now, can you lose weight by walking an hour a day? The answer depends on whether you have a plan and how you choose your routine. If you're walking for fitness, you can probably do it for less than an hour a day. If you're looking for a fun, low impact way to lose some weight, you can do it for more. Either way, be sure to choose the kind of program that works for you and remember to keep your motivation up.
When I first decided to lose weight, I chose to walk everyday to see if I would lose the weight I was aiming for. It was going well for a while, but then I began to feel lethargic and had trouble keeping up. By the end of the first week I was hardly walking anymore! But I kept at it and kept my motivation up and I dropped the pounds by the end of the second week!
So, can you lose weight by walking an hour a day? In theory, you should be able to, since you burn more calories by walking. But if you only go for a few miles a day, it may not be enough in the long run and you might actually end up hurting yourself!
Walking is a great aerobic exercise that you can do for any length of time. You don't need any equipment or special skills to get started. You will need to be sure that you are adequately hydrated and that you have the stamina to walk for the whole duration. Many people underestimate the amount of stamina that they need to be able to go for a full hour without feeling tired or fatigued. If you can go for an hour and not feel tired, you will be exercising for hours a day and that is certainly more than can be said for sitting down all day and doing nothing.
If you are overweight, walking can be a very good way to start any weight loss program. It will help you burn calories and fat more quickly. You can also improve your posture and it may even help to improve your health. In fact, if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure, you should talk to your doctor before beginning a walking regimen. This is one of the most healthy ways to lose weight and has a low risk of serious health problems.
The best thing about this form of exercise is that there are no hard and fast rules. You can go as slowly or as quickly as you feel comfortable with and the same applies to walking as to running. You can increase the distance walked as you become fitter. The important thing is to find something that feels right to you. If you are not motivated to do anything more than a few miles per day, then no amount of equipment or tips from anyone can help you to lose weight by walking an hour a day.
